Koh Samui and Koh Pha-ngan are recognised as Thailand's party islands, but Phuket nightlife has slowly been creeping up and many of the promoters and club owner who reside on Samui are coming over to check out what Phuket has to offer. Tired of the cutthroat politics of Koh Samui, Phuket is the natural alternative.

Phuket is large, it attracts upwards of five million tourists a year and it is full of money. For a long time, Phuket nightlife was focused on nothing more than local Thai clubs, but gradually the discos invaded and the scene began to evolve.

As well as the regular tourist haunts, such as Banana in Patong and Timberhut in Phuket City, there are a few venues that have really been pushing boundaries in the past 12 months.

Perhaps no club has done more to help develop Phuket nightlife than Club Lime at Patong Beach. Club Lime was really the first club to expose the island to large doses of breaks, electro and even drum n bass.

Also at Patong Beach is Seduction. For the most part, Seduction is aimed at mass tourists, with loud pop-dance music and hip hop, but every now and then the owners take it a bit further, as was shown when they booked the likes of Louie Vega and Judge Jules. There were even rumors that Tiesto was due to make an appearance, but the deal fell through.

Phuket nightlife has a lot to offer, but the island seems closed to all the new possibilities. It takes time to make a scene change.

A world cultural phenomenon, "Earth from Above: An aerial portrait of our planet towards a sustainable development" has been seen by over 120 million people in 110 cities around the world since its first exhibition on the grids of the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris in 2000. More than 3 millions copies of the book have been sold and it has been translated into 24 languages. Zen Department Store and the French Embassy in Thailand are pleased to offer to all the visitors an unforgettable exhibition!

Earth from Above - Yann Arthus-Bertrand

"Earth from Above" aims to offer a message on sustainable development. More than a staging of beautiful pictures, it is an inventory of fixtures of our planet, with educationalist supports to help us better understand and preserve it. This exhibition has been regularly enriched by new photographs.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand invites us to a journey through the realities of the world. His aerial photographs reflect the variety of natural habitats and expressions of life, but also the imprint of man and the damages made to the environment. Most of the photographs of Earth from Above were taken from a helicopter between 30 and 3000 m.of altitude and after some 4000 hours of flight.

Earth from Above - Yann Arthus-Bertrand

Witness photographer, Yann Arthus-Bertrand is addressing himself to citizens of all countries and inviting them to reflect upon the evolution of the planet and the future of humanity. The exhibit emphasizes that, more than ever, the levels and the current patterns of consumption, production and the exploitation of resources are not viable in the long term. It illustrates a decisive stage, where the alternative that sustainable development offers will lead the changes that will allow meeting the needs of the present without jeopardizing the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. These changes, this commitment following the path leading to sustainable development do not depend only on goverment's policies and on the powerful people of this world. Each individual has a role to play for the future of the planet, everyone has the power and the duty to act and to take action, en masse, to influence decision making.

Through this exhibition, the means of awareness are being offered to us by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. These photographs result from a patient investigative work which began in 1990, representing over one hundred visited countries, elected from thousands of shots. They owe their evoking power of emotion to the eye of Yann Arthus-Bertand and to his desire to testify for future generations. A giant world map (of the National Geographical Institute of France) will also be placed on the ground to allow visitors to identify the location of the shots presented in the exhibition.

Earth from Above - Yann Arthus-Bertrand

Aware of this impact on the planet, Yann Arthus-Bertrand has created the association GoodPlanet.org. His ambition is to act and to make people act in favour of sustainable development. He has set up actioncarbone.org. Through this project, everyone can try to compensate for the emissions of greenhouse gases caused by his or her own activities, by helping projects in the field of renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand has already flown over Thailand many times. He will probably do it again during his visit to Bangkok for the opening of this exhibition.
