Once you've got a Driving License (Car or Motorbike), you have to renew it after one year. You can then apply to a 5 Year one. Here are the documents and information you will need:

1. ALWAYS make sure that your existing license has EXPIRED, don't turn up on the day it is expiring, or they will tell you to come back when it HAS expired - daft as it sounds that's the way they apply the rules,

2. You WILL require a current medical certificate,

3. One copy of the main page of your passport and current visa page both signed by yourself,

4. Proof of place of residence from local immigration department, not older than 30 days,

5. You do NOT need to provide new photos, as they now are able to take the photo and the photo is incorporated into the new style driving license, which not only incorporates the pic of yourself but the details of you name and date of birth etc in English as well as Thai.

6. Total cost of 630 Baht for a car license renewal.

Obtaining a 1 Year Driving License

What you need is:

1. Passport with a non-immigrant visa,
2. Photos for each license you intend to apply for,
3. Medical certificate, from any small clinic - costs about 100 baht,
4. Letter from Immigration confirming your address in the area. Just bring your rental agreement alt. house book (if you own your own home) with you,
5. 105 baht for car license / 55 baht for motorbike - valid 1 year.

It is best if you already have an International Driving License, otherwise you will have to take a written test and a driving test, in you own vehicle. If you have a Driving License from your own country, you'll need to have it translated in English and confirmed by your embassy (see with your embassy for details).

After the first year you will be entitled to a license for 5 years.
