Ministry of Defence) - The original name was Rong Thaman Na (front barracks). This is the place where there were three palaces which constructed under the royal order of H.M. King Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulalok the Great, King Rama I. He graciously ordered the construction for his royal sons as follows, 1. Thanon Lak Mueang palace, palace No.2 was constructed and became the residence of Krommamuen Chit Phakdi (Prince Thap). 2. Thanon Lak Mueang palace, palace No.4 was constructed and to become the residence of Krommamuen Sri Suren (Prince Khantharot), and 3. Thanon Lak Mueang palace, palace No.5 Prince Damrong Rachanuphap presumed that it was built for his majesty's son, Prince Thap Thin, and later it was changed to be Rong Mai (Silk House) since the reign of King Rama III, until in the reign of King Rama V, his majesty graciously ordered to construct Rong Thaman Na to be used for the residence of the soldiers who guarded the capital city. It was also the warehouse of all arms, beast of burdens, vehicles and also various provisions. Chao Phraya Surasak Montri (Choem Saeng Chu Toh) was the controller of this construction, it was started in year 1881 and completed in 1884, and the official openning was took place on July 18, 1884. The budget of construction and decorations were about 570,000 baht. The building of the ministry of defence were built as a group buildings of the late European architectural style, and it was very popular in Thailand at that time.
